Isaiah 27:2b-3a

² “Sing about a fruitful vineyard:
³     I, the Lord, watch over it;
I water it continually.

Observation - What does it say?

The vineyard represents all those who believe in the Lord, including the people of Israel and the church today. Speaking about his vineyard, God declares that he personally looks after it and waters it without ceasing.

Understanding - What does it mean?

What struck me in reading this today was the care and concern God has for his people. Although he created the galaxies and calls the stars by name (Psalm 147:4), God chooses to be intimately involved in the lives of those who believe in him. He watches over them. He causes their thirsty souls to be satisfied with the water he provides. What is that water? In scripture, water often represents the Holy Spirit:

John 7:37-39  Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Isaiah 44:3 'For I will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and My blessing on your descendants;

John 4:14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

God satisfies thirsty souls by inviting them to drink from himself!

Life Application

Are you going to the right place to drink?

Having 4 days off this last weekend for Thanksgiving was awesome. I was able to rest and have lots of good food and time with family, and also tackled some projects around the house that had been on the back burner for a while. But on Thanksgiving morning, I found myself glued to my phone looking at Black Friday ads. I was convinced I needed to take advantage of some deals. This continued into the weekend and I started to feel consumed by it. I paused Saturday night and asked my wife to pray with me. What we sensed God remind us of in that moment was this: Only God satisfies. The truth is, buying something will never result in me being even a bit more joyful. Even the projects around the house, though they feel good to accomplish, wont fill me with lasting satisfaction. God is the only source of peace, joy and fulfillment.

God, only you satisfy. Thank you for continually offering yourself to us! Please help us to remember that no material thing, no relationship, no job, no recognition or fame, could ever come close to satisfying us like you. We come to you today, asking for you to pour out your Spirit upon us in greater measure. Amen.
