Exodus 18

ScriptureExodus 18:4and the other was named Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.”Observation - What does it say?
Moses had named his son Eliezer, which means God is my helper. He named him that because he experienced firsthand that the God of his father had become his own personal helper.
Understanding - What does it mean?
When I read the phrase “my father’s God was my helper,” I experienced 2 desires stir up within me:
“my father’s God…”
- I want my children to see who my God is. The truth is that they will see who my God is. Some people will notice that their father’s god is alcohol or money or football or _______. It becomes obvious who or what our parents serve. I long for my children to see that Jesus is my God! I want them to see that I am consumed with, in love with, and devoted to, the Lord!
“…was my helper.”
- I want my children to experience God as their own helper. Moses had experienced his father’s God first hand and his father’s God had become his own. God has changed my life and I have chosen to serve him. He has encountered me and transformed me from the inside out, filled me with purpose and joy, and revealed himself as my provider, protector, healer and helper. I long for my children to experience God the same way!
Life ApplicationSet a godly example for my kids.Pray for them to know God as I do.
God, thank you for my parents! Thank you for their example and that they have always encouraged me to seek and know you for myself. I can say as Moses did, "my father's God has become my helper." May my children someday say the same! You are my God and have been my helper. Please bless my children to know you as their God and as their helper. Help me to set a good example for them and to raise them to know and love you. Amen.
