Revelation_19
Scripture
Revelation 19:9-10 NIV
“Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.” At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers and sisters who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.””
Observation-What does it say?
Babylon is no more. As a result, a symphony of praise erupts. This chapter is broken up into a symphony of praise, the wedding supper of the lamb, the Return of the King with the words king of kings and Lord of Lords written on his thigh, and an invitation to a different feast. (Source: Higher Learning Revelation notes)
John was so overwhelmed with praise that he wanted to worship the angel that was delivering the message to him from God, but the angel told John that he was just a servant like him and to worship God instead.
Understanding-What does it mean?
Worship the Creator, not the created.
As the Apostle Paul says, “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.”
Galatians 6:14 NIV
Even though angels are strong heavenly beings and John wanted to worship the particular angel who was giving him the prophecies, the angel knew the Source of all the prophecy and praise wasn’t him, but rather Someone greater than him.
In Higher Learning, we discussed how John may have been in such awe and because the angel was the closest form to God that he could actually look at (because no one could look upon the face of a Holy God and live as Ex. 33:20 states, until we are in our perfect transfigured bodies), he ended up worshipping him (the angel). John did it out of a pure heart, knowing God as the true source of all power, yet praising the physical, heavenly being in front of him because of how much praise he had in his heart. He didn’t know what else to do.
Life Application
We are all servants, created in the image of the One we serve.
I admit that it’s easy to give credit and praise to those who do good deeds for the Lord because they are who we can physically see; however, we must remember where it all originates from. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:16 NIV
Dear Lord, I pray that our good deeds would cause others to glorify You as the Source of all things good. I pray that we would stay connected to Your light and let go of anything that is not of You. Thank you for your holiness and that no darkness can penetrate Your glory. May our hearts continue to erupt with worship and praise to the only One who is worthy of it. Amen.
