Genesis_26

Scripture

Genesis 26:28 NIV

28 They answered, “We saw clearly that the Lord was with you; so we said ‘There ought to be a sworn agreement between us’ – between us and you.  Let us make a treaty with you…

Observation

Chapter 26 begins with the Lord appearing to Isaac (Abraham’s son), telling him to stay in Gerar. He was trusting and obedient in that matter…but then immediately shows his lack of faith/trust when he tells the men that Rebekah (his wife) is his sister. Eventually, the truth is revealed and Abimelek gives orders that anyone who harms him or Rebekah be put to death.

Everything Isaac does from that point on brings “fruit.” Crops are planted and returned a hundredfold. He becomes rich and his wealth grows. He gains so many flocks and herds and servants that he is asked to move for being “too powerful.”

In his new space, he recognizes God as the source for all his success, saying “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.”

God comes close – appearing to Him and reinforcing His blessing, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”

The next visit is Abimelek with his adviser and commander of his forces…which is met with a question from Isaac, “Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?”

Understanding

There’s so much good stuff here – God’s provision (the crops, the wealth, the flocks and herds and servants), His grace with Isaac’s lack of faith, a reminder to give God glory as the source for all our earthly gifts and successes. But what struck me was the observation from Abimelek shown in verse 28.

Abimelek recognized that God was with Isaac and it brought further favor – a peace treaty.

Life Application

God, you have given me so much favor, so many blessings…may I always remember and give you the glory as the source for my provision. Help me to show faith in my giving – giving more and often, as you direct me to.  Give me your heart, your eyes for the people and situations around me – that I may be used by you.

In your name, I pray. Amen.
