Hebrews 9-8.16.22

Scripture

Hebrews 9:9-10

This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order.

Observation

There is absolutely nothing I can do to wash away my sins – only Jesus can.

Understanding

Throughout the book of Hebrews, the author compares the old covenant to the new covenant. Under the old covenant, people were required to follow extensive laws and rules and make blood sacrifices and even then they could not come into God’s presence. Under the new covenant, Jesus made the sacrifice for me, and if I will believe it and accept it, my conscience is wiped clean. Under the old covenant, they could never live up. Under the new covenant, I don’t have to live up!

Vs. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

Accepting His forgiveness clears our hearts and minds and makes room for us to truly know Him so we will do His will.

Heb. 8:10 I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

Life Application

Lord, help me stop my striving to earn your love and forgiveness. I don’t deserve it and there’s nothing I can do to earn it. You have already given it.
