Proverbs 8 - 6.7.2024

Scripture - Pick one verse that stood out to you.

Proverbs 8:12-14

“I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;

    I possess knowledge and discretion.

To fear the Lord is to hate evil;

    I hate pride and arrogance,

    evil behavior and perverse speech.

Counsel and sound judgment are mine;

    I have insight, I have power.

Observation - What about this verse stands out to you?

I think the most difficult biblical task I have given myself over the years is to learn parenting through the bible. Sometimes, I have wished that God had laid out a plan for parents who are Christians in Leviticus. As I read Leviticus 6, I could feel a part of me going, I wish there were several chapters devoted to raising children! Maybe there is and I have missed it but over the years I have done my best to use the examples of God’s love and God’s justice to hone my (very limited) parenting skills.

I felt like I was in a parenting rut this week. I had been doing a lot better over the past several years, but this week I felt like I missed the mark. I felt like the Holy Spirit telling me to go back to the basics, to seek Wisdom:

“I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.” - v.7
“Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight, I have power.” - v.14
“By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth.” -v.15,16

And then I was hit with some 2 Peter 1:5-7:

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.

Application - How will you apply this to your life?

I’m going back to the basics today. I feel like I am in a slight parenting rut, but I will not give up. I will pray to God for His Wisdom more often. I will run my parenting techniques, philosophies, and house policies through the ‘growth filter’ provided by the apostle Peter. If I feel like the house rules, parenting techniques don’t work with the filter, then I will start from scratch implementing greater Christ centered parenting techniques.

Prayer - Write out a prayer.

My loving Lord, my Savior, my Creator, my Teacher. Please, teach me wisdom today. I wish to be a better parent, a better husband, a better son, a better brother, a better friend. Grant me just a piece of your wisdom Lord, so that I may grow. Help to add onto me Lord. Build my faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love.

May my deeds, my words, my very essence be a reflection of growth in You. In the name of Jesus do I pray, amen.
